I wanted to design a package and brand the bronze popcorn necklace I made.
I chose to design a package for a neckless I designed using cast bronze. The pendant was part of a series of relationship-themed jewelers, with the popcorn representing the dating phase of a romance. Each pendant is uniquely cast from a piece of real popcorn.
I decided my target audience to be between 16 and 30 because this age group is the most likely to start a relationship. I interviewed four people who fit this range and asked them what word they associate with popcorn and hearing how they described their last gift receiving experience. Using that information, I created a brain map and some sketches, as shown in the images.
For my final design, I wanted to simplify the tapered form of a unpopped kernel so that it can be replicated with paper. The folding mechanism was inspired by the Chinese takeout box, with its ability to open out and unveil its content, providing an element of surprise.
is the perfect temperature for popping popcorns, complementing the number of days I’m thinking of you.

The band slides away to reveal the gold pleated letters. With a gentle push on the tab, the package pops open and lifts up the unique pendant with a bow tied around it, and the chain tugged away underneath in a box.
